This unique 4 day stage, 260 km event allows Mountain Bikers access to areas within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, far off the normal tourist routes, allowing riders to experience the values this park has to offer. iSimangaliso is among the most diverse parks in the world with eight interlinking ecosystems, one of the highest bird counts in the country, incredible plant and game species biodiversity (all of the Big Five) and superlative natural beauty. The second day the route transits through Phinda Private game reserve, Big 5 country before exiting onto the False Bay floodplain. This is an amazing opportunity to experience and one that will never be forgotten.

The iSimangaliso MTB 4 Day Event aims at raising awareness and funds towards the protection of rare and endangered species within this world heritage site. It will enable riders to experience the world heritage values for which iSimangaliso was inscribed - biodiversity, interlinking ecosystems and sense of place – using existing management tracks and animal paths, jeep tracks and secondary gravel roads.

All prices are based on a per-person-sharing basis with allocations based on a first come first served basis. All meals for all types of accommodation will be served at the Tent City.

Registration will take place on Wednesday 20th August 2014, followed by a compulsory Dangerous Game Briefing and the Event Overview at 7.00pm. Please indicate on the entry form where you intend to register.

Vehicles can be left, under guard, in St Lucia at the Sugar Bay Campsite, a safe secure area and a bus service will transport riders to the start. Alternatively riders can either be dropped off at the start or leave their vehicles at the start in Mantuma and make their own transport arrangements back to the start.

The Bus Service is optional extra please indicate if you require this service on your entry form.

Day 1

Each day starts with riders gathering in the start chutes by 7.15am, with the event starting at 7.30am. The first day the riders head through the uMkhuze Game Reserve section of iSimangaliso, now boasts all of the Big 5 and the highest density of rhino in SA and includes other game such as elephants, buffalo, hippo, cheetah and wild dog to the eMshophi Gate, and into the Lebombo mountains. The re-entry is via a game management gate at the southern end of the reserve and riders will ride back through the reserve to Mantuma.

Day 2

From Mantuma the riders will head toward the southern border with Phinda and then head up into the Lebombo Mountains onto the uMkhumbi Plateau before descending to the uMkhumbe hunting camp exits at the South gate entering the Hluhluwe River Lodge crossing the Hluhluwe river over a pedestrian bridge and entering the Bonamanzi Game Reserve where we stay overnight. The ride through Phinda, Big 5 territory is 16km long and the route exits Phinda onto the Mzinene Flood Plain and into the False Bay park. The track utilizes the many hiking trails in the park and exits at the main gate to the Tent Village

Day 3

We leave Bonamanzi exiting onto the Nyalazi Flood plain with it’s 25km of single track before entering the Western shores section of the iSimangaliso park, which includes pans and open grasslands back-dropped by forested coastal dunes. Game found here includes elephant, rhino, hippo, buffalo, giraffe and numerous others. Once exiting the park the route takes in a short section of the main road through the tourist village of St Lucia, entering the forest trail of iGwalaGwala alongside Lake St Lucia Estuary, and ends at the St Lucia Ski Boat club.

Accommodation is at the Elephant Lake Hotel and Elephant Lake Inn and the sugar Bay camping ground. A shuttle service will transport riders between the two venues and the Race Start at the Ski Boat Club

Meals will be served at the Ski boat club.

Day 4

The route heads towards the beach along the Estuary boardwalk - an experience in itself - along the beach route, heading out through the main Bhangazi Gate into the big game territory of the Eastern Shores (including most species except lion), to Mission Rocks and back through St Lucia town, through iGwalaGwala Trail to finish at the St Lucia Ski Boat Club, where one or two cold ones will be very welcome.

Registration Venue and Transport Options

Rider Transport to the Start: In 2013 we were able to provide a driver service for your vehicle back to the start. With the increase in teams this is not possible for 2014, we have made alternate arrangements by holding registration at two venues, one in St Lucia at the finish and one at the start in uMkhuze.
You have the option of:

1. Registering in St Lucia, and parking your vehicle in a secure area at the finish. We provide a bus and bike transport service to the start. Registration from 9.30 am to 2.00pm. Bus service departs at 10.00, 11.30, 1.00, 2.30. Cost for the service is R350 plus vat per person. Bookings for the bus are on the registration link, again first come first served.
2. OR Registering in Mantuma uMkhuze Registration is from 4.00 to 6.00pm. Either get dropped off or leave your vehicle in a safe parking area and make your own arrangements to get back to the start. We are not providing a driver service. Remember the park gates will close at 6.00pm.

Entrance: Should you wish to pay via cash or do an EFT, register directly on our website at www.isimangaliso-mtb.co.za.
