DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

SATURDAY 2 JUNE

Mountain Bike Gymkhana
A morning of fun for the whole family. Participants will compete in a series of fun races and old fashioned games  including the Slow Race, Sticky Bun Race, Egg and Spoon Race, Barrel Race and a Skills Challenge. Great prizes to be won.

Family Ride
A scenic  10km ride along the Gypsy's Bend route for tea and scones at the river.  The ride will depart from All Out Adventures.  The route follows established quad trails and  well worn single track.  Short cuts around the tricky parts make this a great ride for the younger riders too.  A black bike/walking route will be set up approximately 1 kilometer from the tea spot.  Parents and little ones can park opposite Johan's sheds and meet up with the riders for tea.

17:00 Night Ride
Bring your high powered torches for 15 km night ride on a new route that follows the single track to Hlalanathi, flies through the mealies to the Puterill's stream and up Secret Pass.  There's a steady climb up the run way to the back of Montusi Lodge before a gnarly downhill (Chicken run alternative) that spits you out on the end of the Gypsy's Bend trail, which meanders quietly back to All Out Adventures.

Night riding opens up another world of mountain biking.   See our night life come alive berg style.  Groups will depart the All Out Center in groups of ability accompanied by a guide.

The night ride will be followed by a Potjie Dinner at the Adventure Centre.  Families and spectators are welcome.  Cold drinks will be on sale, but please bring along your own booze.

SUNDAY 3 JUNE

Trail Run (15km)
This run follows a spectacular route in the foothills of the Drakensberg, offering some fun boulder hopping, river crossings and hill scrambles. Runners will be inspired by the beautiful views of the Drakensberg's Amphitheatre, and the Puterill's stream in the valley below.

Fun Run (7km)
A spectacular and somewhat challenging run into the Montusi Gorge and back to All Out Advenutres.  Highlights include the Waterfall Cave, the Petrified Forest and Rocky Pass.  This is going to be an adventure!

Why ride the Royal Drak Challenge 45km route:

  • Beautiful scenery with dramatic views of the Amphitheatre.
  • Impeccable organization, uncrowded intimate setting, great food and awesome kid's facilities.
  • Achievable and fun technical challenges.
  • A variety of fast and smooth flowing, perfectly crafted, well worn trails.
  • Ride on permanently marked All Out Trails single tracks with a wonderful sense of place.

Now that you're in, here's what this year's Classic holds for you:

Your motorbike escort will get you out of the forest on a 5 meter wide, pass at will trail.   You leave the Adventure Centre on the quad trail and head down to Lizelle's Drifts.   Once you have crossed Lizels drift you begin 7km of climbing through Alpine Heath to Drifters Camp.  Some refer to this section as "7km of up hell for one  heavenly downhill" Yep this is a true Cat. 2 climb.  After 5 km of rolling 4x4 track tucked beneath the sand stone cliffs, you are rewarded with the awesome Nook Road Down Hill, which continues down the run way, right to the bottom of Secret Pass.  Once you've crossed the Puterill's Stream you head along the canal to Chris' Cascade - this is the challenge you all will be talking about at the finish.  Stay off the brakes as you ride down the waterfall!  From there it's up Rocky Pass and then a steep downhill past the Petrified Forest down into the Montusi Gorge.  You ride past the Montusi Waterfall Cave and climb out of the Gorge and head back towards the Adventure Centre.  Enjoy the cheering of the crowd because the final 20kms is going to be tough!

From the Adventure Centre you take the fast single track towards Hlalanathi, where you complete a short section on the tar before heading down to the Tugela River Meander. From the Tugela River Meander you gain closer views of the Amphitheater until you reach a switch back.  With the mighty Berg as a backdrop be sure to style as you pass the photographer.  The Trilby traverse continues for another 3km to the first water table at Mont Aux Sources Hotel.   Trilby climbs steeply from the Mont Aux Sources Hotel to a 5 km rolling plateau.  There are no less than ten bridges to keep you on your bike.

At the end of the plateau is the infamous Dutoit's Downhill !

The ride finishes fast along the single track of Gypsy's Bend  and up the exit trail over Lizelle's Drift back to the Adventure Centre for a big finish.  This may well be the toughest ride you will ever love.

Montusi Mountain Lodge 19km Intermediate
The 19k route follows the permanent Montusi Gorge Trail from All Out Adventures.  This well established route is achievable by most and considered to be the best in the Berg.    This year's route is the reverse of last year.  You leave the Adventure Centre on the quad trail and head down to Lizelle's Drifts.   Once you have crossed Lizels Drift you begin the climb towards Montusi via Gypsy's Bend.  The steepest section of the climb is on the tar road, and then its back on to the single track for the Windmill loop and the dramatic Montusi Gorge escarpment.  The scenic single track continues across the stream along the Riverview Meander.  From here it's a quick descent into the Puterill's valley via Secret Pass where things get very interesting!  The trail goes down Chris's Cascade, up Rocky Pass, and takes in the beautiful Montusi Waterfall Trail.  A moderate climb then takes you back to the Adventure Centre to the finish.

The Cavern Berg Resort and Spa 10km Beginner
Our permanently marked Gypsy's Bend trail has been given a facelift, with the trail being widened to give beginners a great intro to smooth flowing single track while offering the experienced parents an awesome ride and stunning scenery.  Like last year, you begin in the All Out forest before descending toward the Montusi Gorge on the big burmed quad trail. Once you have crossed Lizels drift you begin a gradual climb towards the little berg with dramatic views of Camels Hump and Sugarloaf Mountains.  At the half way point the trail crosses a big stream on big flat rocks.  From here a steady downhill takes you along the river's edge to the 8 km mark. After a short rocky climb, you are back to Lizels Drift and the quad bike trail brings you back to the Center to the forest finish.

Spectator Fun
All Out Adventures is the perfect venue for spectators:  All the Adventure Centre activities will be operating and our famous supervised Kids Zone is always a hit with the little people.  Children can be checked in for the morning while parents ride, or just enjoy a cappuccino and a piece of cake!  Kids Zone Activities include crafts, face painting, jumping castle, Ninja Warrior Jnr course and dueling sit and zips.  The experienced staff from Royal Drakensberg Primary will be overseeing all the activities, so parents are assured that their children are in good hands.  8:00-14:00 entry into the Kids Zone costs just R50 and includes a snack.

There will also be no shortage of good coffee and tasty food on sale.
