SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

THE UPDATED 2018 DOLPHIN MILE SURF SWIM SERIES CALENDAR

  The Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series, truly unique on the calendar of open water sea swim events, both locally and internationally, will now have further opportunities on offer in the 2018 programme of events for open water sea swimmers, both present and future.

Following the most successful Triple Distance Surf Swim event of 8 April (incorporating swim distance events of 800 metres, 1.6 kilometres, 3 kilometres and 5.4 kilometres), and now the well-attended Event #1 of the 2018 Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series (event report under the “Race Reports and News” tab on this website), it is clear that there is a growing interest in open water sea swims.

Participation in the DOLPHIN MILE SURF SWIM SERIES, now in its 10th year of existence, has reflected this growing interest amongst all sectors of South Africa’s population.

To cater for those wishing to experience, and enjoy, the challenge of organised open water sea swims, the 2018 Dolphin Mile Surf Swim Series calendar, in addition to the usual nine Dolphin Mile events, will include three 800m and three 3.2 kilometre events spread over the duration of the 2018 Series.

(Please take careful note of the UPDATED calendar for specific dates of these additional events.)

The new 800 metre (Half Mile) events will be open to all proficient swimmers of age 10 years and older.

*The longer 3.2 kilometre (Two Mile) events are for the stronger and more experienced swimmers and, for safety reasons, will carry an entry qualification requirement.

Entries for the 3.2 kilometre swims will be accepted at the discretion of the Organiser and the Safety Officer. As a general guide: In order to be allowed to participate in the 3.2 kilometre (2 Mile) events, a swimmer should have already been able to complete at least one Dolphin Mile Surf Swim event in a time of 40 minutes or less.

For many swimmers of wide-ranging ability, from the ages of 10 years to 70+, their participation in sea swims of this nature is often simply because they enjoy the event as a personal challenge or as part of a healthy lifestyle and exercise regimen.

The completion of a single open water mile swim is a significant achievement in any person’s book of life experiences; an open water sea mile certainly takes that achievement up a notch or two!

We look forward to seeing you at the next Dolphin Mile Series event, 1600m OR 800m, on Sunday 22 April 2018.

For your interest, benchmarks set during the DOLPHIN MILE SURF SWIM SERIES of 2017.

- 9 DOLPHIN MILE SURF SWIM SERIES events conducted from April to September;

- 764 individual swimmers, from ages 10 years through to 70+, participated in at least one Series’ event in 2017;

- 17 swimmers completed all 9 swims and 79 completed at least 6 swims;

- 251 swimmers being the highest number of entrants in a single 2017 event;

- 1881 sea miles, in total, completed by participants in the 2017 Series;

- 2133 the number of individual swimmers completing at least one Series’ event since 2010;

- 8 swimmers awarded “50 Miler” medals for reaching this milestone for swims completed since 2010…

A portion of each event participant’s entry fee is applied in support of Dolphin Mile initiatives.  In 2017 entry fee proceeds allowed for a significant donation to MARINE SURF LIFESAVING CLUB (MSLC).  The funds were applied to the purchase of an outboard motor for their inflatable rescue craft, used during the course of their public lifesaving duties and responsibilities along their stretch of beach, and additional large marker buoys for use in organized water sports events hosted by MSLC.
