A record three hundred and fifty riders took part in the
Heatonville Leopard Classic this past weekend - a "Big 5 Series"
race which is fast earning a reputation for offering the best
single-track riding in the province.
John Readman of the Heatonville Farmer's Association, which
hosted the event, said: "We are overjoyed with the support from the
mountain bikers, who gave positive feedback about our course, the
slick administration of the race by ROAG as well as the effort put
in by our local farming community.
"We are also very appreciative of our generous sponsors, namely
Bell Equipment, Trappers, Power Spar, Thula Thula Private Game
Reserve, Multi-Axle, Kenart Platinum, Truter James de Ridder,
Zululand Pest Control, Alliance Graphics, Ritchie Ford, Nedbank,
ABI, Profert, African Essence Spa and Zululand Cycles."
For the first time Zululand Cycles donated a bicycle as a lucky
draw prize to encourage development riding in the community. The
bicycle was won by Hlonipho Ngcobo, who coincidentally had lost his
bicycle in a fire at his home.
Tyronne White was the first man home in the 50km Classic in a
time of 02:00:06, followed by Sean Merredew in 02:00:12 and John
Ntuli in 02:07:59. Desiree Briedenhann led the woman's Classic with
a time of 02:40:42, followed by Simone Scrase in 03:20:51 and Jan
Grundlingh in 03:22:38.
The family duo of Matthew and Savannah Schuit won the men and
women's 25km event respectively with times of 01:00:32 and
01:09:18. Savannah, racing in the junior category (16 -18 years),
did extremely well to come across the line third overall. In the
men's race Stephen Thompson was placed second followed by Ross
Winckworth while Seonaid Beningfield and Marietjie Lotz took second
and third positions in the women's race.
