06 September 2010

successfully hosted for the fifteenth time this year at the
Karkloof Farmers Market. Great new routes, and beautiful weather
ensured fun for all! The event was proudly presented by the
1st Howick Cubs and Scouts.
Saturday
Highlander participants hit the ground running on Saturday
with the brilliant Bush and Bundu 5, 10 and 20km trail runs. The
men's 20km Bush and Bundu trail run was convincingly won by Ian
Don-Wauchope in 1 hour 21, a time that would make mountain bikers
proud! The ladies race was won by Lisa Bohman in just over 1 hour
30! The 10km trail run was won by Richard Roberts and Lisa
Bohman.
The 20km Highlander Night Race, included an exciting transition
through the Karkloof Farmers Market, and was won by the Moffatt
Optical husband and wife team of Werner and Nikki Jonas. The
evening race was followed by a delicious Woolworths pasta party,
and the sumptuous sounds of live Latino music.
Sunday
Sunday featured a full program of mountain biking for all
levels, as well as showcasing the food, friendly locals, and fare
weather that Howick is loved for. Race director Paul Rencken
worked tirelessly for months ahead of the race ensuring the perfect
mix of speed, single-track and scenery, on the 10km,25km,
35km and 45km Moffatt Optical Super Classic routes.
The 45km Moffatt Optical Howick Highlander Super
Classic
Local hero and defending Moffatt Optical Howick Highlander
champion, Craig Paul, set out to defend his title in his home
hills, in perfect riding conditions. After 1 Hour and 40 minutes of
fearsome racing, Craig and Andrew Warr appeared from the
surrounding forests together. Cheered on by the loyal locals,
Craig managed to pull ahead of Andrew. The locals are looking
forward to watching Craig try and make it a Highlander hatrick in
2011. Similarly, the ladies race was very competitive and in the
end was won by Landy Puddu, followed closely by Jean Hackland.
The 25km sub-junior series girls race was won by Savannah
Schuit. The sub-junior boys race was won by Alan Hatherley, in the
fastest 25km time on the day of 1 hour 12 seconds. The 25km overall
ladies and men's race was won by Liz Alexander and Dani Jensen.
The 35km Meander, and the 10km race, once again, proved popular
with those searching for beautiful riding in this mountain biker's
paradise, in a relaxed fun ride format. The 2km race was an
opportunity for the tiny tots, supported by family and friends, to
show off their training wheel-talent! The future of mountain biking
looks as bright as a midlands morning!
