Big 5 Series Zini Estate Super Classic
18 June 2010
The Zini Estate Super Classic was a tremendous success now that
the dust has settled and the cleanup is being finalised. Organisers
fears of miserable weather (and the associate poor turnout) falling
to the wayside, the event got off to a fantastic start with
combined numbers for the 50, 25 and 10km races exceeding 550.
Numbers were expected to drop with fierce competition for athletic
ability and the weekend warriors from the Comrades Marathon and
Shongweni Mountain Bike race. Despite this as dawn broke the crowds
began to roll in en masse and the event kicked up a gear.
The collaboration between Mtunzini Round Table(250), Mtunzini
Athletics Club and Mtunzini Primary School proved to be highly
efficient with the event running smoothly from beginning to
end.
The event showed off the good, the better and the best of
Mtunzini with tracks winding through the Umlalazi Nature Reserve,
Zini River estates, Local sugar cane fields, Mondi forestry and
indigenous thickets and grasslands with a good smattering of
sea-views thrown in for good measure.
The Zini estate super classic has set precedence for the
remaining 4 races of the Big 5 Series (Heatonville Classic - 27
June 2010, Hluhluwe Challenge - 25 July 2010, Monzi Challenge - 5
September 2010, Kwambo Challenge - 10 October 2010) with no serious
complications or hiccups rendering the event problematic.
Impressive Pre and On-day registration had all and sundry
waiting at the start with time to spare. Despite some interesting
technical sections, some heart-racing climbs and some breathtaking
scenery all and sundry finished their respective races with little
more than some scratches, bruises and a medal to remind them, '
Mtunzini, I came, I saw, I survived.'
