Please excuse me for the
delay in my articles I have had a crazy 2 months racing all over
the country 6 races in 6 weeks, under my new team, Team Jeep.
A lot of lessons were learnt...some the hard way, in time I will
try pass these on.
Well winter has arrived and
triathlon shuts down for a while as no sane person really enjoys
swimming in winter.
This should not mean that your
multi sport training comes to a standstill too. You have a couple
of options on how to keep the fitness and legs ticking over.
Firstly just keep on training,
brave the cold and dark mornings, fight the good fight and keep up
the good work. You can still work on your swim, just find a heated
pool would be my advice, in fact this is a great time to get
some stroke correction in and rectify the small things and perfect
that technique for the next season.
Another way to keep at it is by
doing single discipline races, like mountain bike races, go onto
ROAG and pick a couple you like the look of, maybe step up in
distance or difficulty, use this time to set a good base or improve
the technical skills. Trail runs are also a great idea, you learn
at race pace the skills of off road running and trail runs add
strength to the legs, which flat fast road running can't.
Then there is the option of
entering the grueling world of duathlon during winter. This will
really put steel in your legs, it's a run-ride-run format, so you
get to do brick training at race intensity. If you think running
off a bike in triathlon is unpleasant try one of these, but they are
great fun and quality training too!
I would advise you to use the
winter to pick a weakness and focus on it, fix it and make it a
strength, also use this time to try things, whether it be adapting
your diet, trying a new juice on the bike, trying a new
distance on the mountain bike, trying a different training
programme or new shoes. Try it all now well away from big races,
once race season arrives you must have it all dialed in and ready
to go.
Keep it pinned till next time.
